16-Sep-2025 | From Trevor Lea : "I found a Speckled Wood with badly damaged wings on the Oakley Wood transect in Bernwood Forest, Bucks (SP616116) today. I cannot believe this damage is inflicted by birds, since the butterfly is such a fast and erratic flier. Another possibility is that the thorns of blackberries catch the wings when it is feeding on the blackberries. A recently emerged Red Admiral was in pristine condition, by comparison. | 09-Sep-2025 | From David Hastings : "There were quite a few butterflies at Otmoor, Oxon (SP559137) this afternoon, but Speckled Wood was by far the most numerous species with 28 seen (all but one were males). Other species were Small Heath (5), Common Blue (5), Peacock (3), Red Admiral (2), Brown Argus (1) and Small Copper (1). There were some whites as well, but as none of them would settle I couldn't tell what they were."
